Puppy crate training is very important. A crate has many benefits like that it provides a den and a safe haven for your pup. It helps to create a routine, it aids in curbing destructive behaviour, it is excellent for toilet training pups, it trains pups to hold their bladders and it can be used for traveling. (not for plane travel)
Wild dogs naturally live in dens, these act as a safe warm haven that keeps them dry and away from danger.
It's also a place where a mother teaches her young to toilet outside: dogs naturally want to keep their dens clean and dry.
So with there natural instincts then crate training shouldn't be to hard.
First things first you have to choose the right crate. A pup or adult dog should be able to comfortably stand up, lie down, stretch and turn around in his crate. That doesn't mean that you have to buy a crate to big for your pup unless it has an area sectioned off to make it smaller. If it's too large it defeats the purpose of creating a den. If it is to large it won't just defeat the purpose of a den but, the pup will go bathroom in the crate. You may need 2 crates, one for when it's a pup, a second one for when it's a adult.
Second thing you need your pup to use the crate to get him/her to use it you can place the crate in an area where he/she can be in some contact with a family member. It's gradual getting your pup to use the crate so take it slow.
Starting off you set the crate up so it's comfy, cosy and inviting. Place a blanket or mat inside the crate on the bottom, to make a cosy floor and have a bedding area inside with a soft bed.
Leave the crate door wide open and put some treats in the crate to tempt the pup inside. You should place the treats at the back of the crate so the pup goes to the back. Once your pups inside close the crate door gradually once he's comfortable and stay close and reassure him/her that it's ok. Keep the closed door periods short at this stage.
When you are happy that all is well with your pup in his/her crate with the door closed you can remove yourself, initially for a short periods and gradually increase these duration.
